Ministry of Health Opened The 6th Symposium Of Indonesia Antimicrobial Resistance Watch

Antibiotics are one important way to cope with infectious diseases, although sometimes accompanied by various negative impacts, such as the occurrence of side effects in patients and resistance in microbes.

It was announced by Minister of Health, dr. Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, MPH, Dr. PH when opening the 6th Symposium Of Antimicrobial Resistance Watch Indonesia in Jakarta (3 / 7). The event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, The Echelon-1, Ministry of Health, the Chairman and members of the Indonesian Society of Clinical Microbiology.

She believed that some of the things that trigger the occurrence of antibiotic resistance, the inappropriateness of the treatment of patients, such as the use of antibiotics that are wrong. Use of antibiotics repeatedly and not rational. Noncompliance of patients taking the medicine, and the use of antibiotics without a prescription for self-medication or self medication.

Minister of Health added, the proper way to prevent and cope with the development of antibiotic resistance, namely by pressing as far as possible the use of antibiotics that are not rational. In addition, the selection and use of antibiotics should be based on the identification test and resistance tests. Hence the need for close cooperation between clinicians with a specialist clinical microbiology and other related specialists.

In order to support these activities, necessary provision of diagnostic facilities and adequate infrastructure in order to check the provision of specialist microbiology and clinical microbiology and other related spesialist, particularly in hospitals type A and B. In addition to enhanced dissemination of information on antibiotic pharmacotherapy and rational antibiotic treatment for doctors, says Minister of Health.

On the occasion, Minister of Health asked all levels of health in Indonesia, and all stakeholders related to increased attention on this problem and take immediate steps to increase prevention efforts and reduction of antibiotic resistance.

She believed that every time a person uses antibiotics, there would be selective pressure, where the microbes are sensitive to die, but the microbes that are resistant will grow and flourish.

"Things could get worse if not done as part of infection control measures in awareness of universal health care units. A result that has been resistant microbes will be spread from one place to another within the health care unit or to another place very quickly. In fact, the resistance and the spread of infection can reduce the quality of health services, reduce patient safety and improve the cost, "said Ministry of Health

Recently, many microbes that have been resistant to first-line antibiotics. This is dangerous for patients with common infections, which previously could be cured with antibiotics such. As a result, treatment of the disease lasts longer and patients are not cured. Besides fatal complications can occur, increasing medication long time, even necessary to use a second-or third-line antibiotics are more expensive, more toxic, and result in increased costs of treatment.

"Given the limited number of graduates of clinical microbiology specialists and other relevant specialists, the existing medical education institutions need to be more active again to increase the quantity and quality of clinical microbiology specialist graduates and other relevant specialists," explained Minister of Health.

Minister of Health recognizes Indonesia's vast territory and the problem of resource constraints, as for the emergence of antibiotic resistance threat resulted in the dissemination of knowledge and information about rational use of antibiotics is limited.
