Indonesia is hosting the 4th Islamic Conference on Health Ministers (ICHM)
Organization Islamic Cooperation (OIC) 2013
Jakarta, October 21st 2013
Indonesia is actively involved in a variety of international organizations, one of them being the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). This organization was founded in Rabat, Morocco, on the 25 of September 1969 during the first meeting of Islamic leaders, which has been organized in response to the burning of the Al Agsa Mosque in Jerusalem on the 21 of August 1969. Currently, OIC is consisting of 57 member states from all over Africa, Arabia and Asia. In June 2011 OIC changed its name from Organization of the Islamic Conference into its current one. OIC as an organization represents the collective voice of the Muslim world.
Islamic Conference on Health Ministers (ICHM)
Within the framework of the OIC, forms of health cooperation between the different member states are stipulated. The ICHM is held every two years and during the conference public health priorities for Muslim communities are discussed as well as various aspects related to the health status in the OIC member countries, including the current situation and latest developments, main concerns, needs and priorities in the field of health.
So far the ICHM has already been conducted in three nations: The first conference took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2nd – 15th of June, 2007), the second ICHM was held in Teheran, Iran (2009) and the third one in Astana, Kazakhstan (29th September – 1st October 2011).
At the initiative of Indonesia, during the 3rd ICHM in Kazakhstan, the proposal of the need for OIC-Strategic Health Programme of Action (OIC-SHPA) was fully supported. OIC-SHPA has been formed to cooperate with OKI in order to follow up with concrete steps, which are measurable and have a clear impact in improving the public health in member states.
It was during the 3rd Islamic Health Ministerial Conference in Astana, Kazakhstan, in 2011, that Indonesia was elected new chairman for the period of 2013 till 2015, replacing Kazakhstan. Moreover, Indonesia was chosen to be the host country for the 4th ICHM in 2013 (21st – 24th of October). The trust can be seen as a form of recognition given to Indonesia for its active role in promoting the importance of cooperation within OIC to improve and develop the health sectors in its member countries, including the implementation of the OIC meeting within the health field.
One of the aims of the ICHM is to produce resolutions and declarations. The first resolution is based on the OIC member’s agreement on the issues discussed during the conference. It can be developed based on one of the previous conferences resolution or it can also be adopted from a WHA resolution tailored to Islamic concepts. In order to monitor, evaluate and act on the declarations and resolutions resulting from ICHM, a committee called the Steering Committee on Health (SCH)was formed.
